Extract from introductory essay: At the meeting point between a rooftop and the sky lies the threshold between defined urban construction and the intangible enormity of empty space. Visually, the colours and shadows draped over each building by the sun emerge from the uniform blue of the sky in an organic pallet that steps outside of stereotypically urban greys and whites.
The origin of ‘Rooftops’ is grounded in street photography, the few dozen images used in the project selected from 807 photographs from a trip to Berlin in 2019. The inspiration for larger works in charcoal and the 140x140cm paintings, came from minute, centimetre wide sections of photographs. This embodies one of the main themes of this project: exposing and appreciating the aspects of the city that often go over-looked as one walks through increasingly packed urban settings.
