#1 Stills
STILLS embodies the essence of photography: a transient, split second moment allowed to live on as an image.
What this project aimed to do is reintroduce the element of movement into the photograph, not through any additional frames nor necessarily human presence, but by engaging with the imagination of the viewer.
By applying the traditional, cinematic 2.35x1 widescreen aspect ratio, coupled with colour grading in post, to carefully selected and intentionally taken photographs, the viewer is encouraged to think they are looking at film still.
How does this create movement in an image which is ‘still’?
The imagination of the viewer fabricates panning camera shots; a car entering into the frame as it ascends the mountain road; the ticking, retro computer font introducing the location of the train station; activities drawn from diverse genres, films, and hundreds of thousands of frames that merely looking at a fabricated still unlock.
